Scope
Geoenergy is calling for papers to be submitted to the thematic collection ‘The Earth as a thermal battery: future directions in subsurface thermal energy storage systems‘.
Subsurface reservoirs, both shallow aquifers and deeper reservoirs, hold the potential to be part of large scale (GWth scale) thermal energy storage systems. These systems may store thermal energy for daily or seasonal withdrawal. Open-loop and closed-loop systems present unique benefits and limitations, and applicability is highly dependent on geology and geochemistry. Colder climates with asymmetric thermal energy withdrawal vs recharge present a particular challenge for thermal reservoir management. Challenges include assessing the impacts of thermal and pressure induced reservoir stress changes, impacts on connected and adjacent aquifers and formations, and long-term operations.
Articles will be considered on the following topics:
- Case studies of shallow and deep thermal energy storage, including their techno-economic assessment, policy impact, and societal engagement.
- Advances in experimental methods and numerical algorithms.
- Reservoir characterisation and uncertainty quantification approaches.
- Well and system designs for improved thermal energy storage and recovery, current and novel drilling technologies.
- The role of chemistry and biology in thermal energy storage and extraction efficiency – impacts upon associated aquifers and subsurface pathways and infrastructure (i.e. mineral scales, biofilms and corrosive chemistry).
