On behalf of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), I wish to express our deepest condolences following the passing of Jean-Jacques Biteau.
Jean-Jacques was a remarkable geoscientist, leader, and ambassador of our community. His loss is deeply felt across EAGE and the broader geoscience world.
Jean-Jacques served with distinction on the EAGE Board for four years, including two years as President. His tenure was marked by wisdom, clarity, and a steadfast belief in the value of scientific exchange and professional community. He was an exceptional representative of our Association, travelling tirelessly around the globe to engage with members, foster collaboration, and share EAGE’s mission with unmatched dedication.
Jean-Jacques had this rare kind of smile that quietly lingered with you, as if it carried a message of assurance and wisdom. In every boardroom, every hallway conversation, and every long-haul flight he took for EAGE, that smile reminded us why we do what we do. Jean-Jacques didn’t just lead with vision; he made you feel seen, heard, and inspired.
We will remember Jean-Jacques for his integrity, generosity, and the quiet strength with which he helped shape EAGE. We will miss his deeply humanistic outlook: a belief in science guided by compassion, and an enduring optimism in the creative and collaborative spirit of our global community. His legacy lives on in our shared work, and in the many lives he touched along the way.
Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him.
Valentina Socco
