The 82nd EAGE conference & exhibition is currently taking place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We are bringing you a daily recap to keep you in the loop on what’s happening in Amsterdam.

Opening session

EAGE 2021 got off to a solid start with the Opening Ceremony which followed the theme “Delivering for the Energy Challenge: Today and Tomorrow”. The dynamic session featured a series of speeches, video presentations and awards highlighting the contributions of the geoscience community in harnessing the world’s natural resources and the key challenges ahead with growing demands for cleaner forms of energy.

This was highlighted during the Opening Debate, “Energy Transition – Will great expectations be realized?”, which was hosted by EAGE Editor Emeritus Andrew McBarnet. During the hour long discussion, the panelists shared their thoughts on some of the main economic, political and environmental factors driving the energy transition. While many scenarios and outlooks were shared the panel all agreed that any expectations for how the energy transition would unfold are all estimates which could vary greatly from reality. They also emphasized the need to develop and pursue more short and medium term goals in order to increase action and certainty in investments and decision making. Panelists included Atul Arya (IHS Markit), Berend Schiffers (EBN) and Abderrezak Benyoucef (OPEC).

The Awards ceremony included a number of key recognitions for outstanding technical papers, professional achievement and contributions to the geoscience community. Professor Yanghua Wang received the highest distinction with the Conrad Schlumberger award and gave the acceptance speech on behalf of the year’s winners.

Icebreaker reception

The Icebreaker Reception was the central hub of the gathering. With a great selection of traditional Dutch food and a wide array of drinks, everyone got a chance to finally catch up after such a long time since the previous EAGE Annual. 

Familiar faces and new connections, the Icebreaker Reception remains the best opportunity to come together with all your peers from the geoscience and engineering field.

Community Hub

Being the focal point of the EAGE’s non-technical activities, the Community Hub was buzzing during the icebreaker reception. This year, the community area has been divided up into two parts: the Hub, where delegates can meet and talk to EAGE representatives, and the EAGE dome – our dedicated presentation area for community activities.

Delegates attending the conference evening on Wednesday can pick up their conference evening ribbon at the hub.

With a plethora of activities taking place delegates are invited to explore the hub to the fullest extent. 

Looking ahead

We look forward to today’s insightful technical presentations taking place in domes at the exhibition area, the Forum Session focussed on “How the oil industry is addressing the energy mix to meet the goals of the transition era”, a series of community talks and activities, and networking with our incredible exhibitors.
